Former Chair, President and CEO, Wellpoint Inc. Angela Braly formerly served as the chair of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of WellPoint, Inc., one of the nation’s largest health benefits companies in terms of medical membership, with approximately 34 million—or one in nine—Americans nationwide covered through its affiliated health plans. In 2011, WellPoint generated operating revenue of $59.9 billion and employed approximately 37,000 associates. WellPoint offers leading health benefits plans and specialty products and services and primarily does business as Anthem Blue Cross, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia or Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Angela was named president and chief executive officer in June 2007, and assumed the role of chair of the board in March 2010 in which she served until August 2012. She directed all aspects of the company’s strategy, including the expansion of its integrated care management programs and tools; the divestiture of WellPoint’s prescription benefits management business; the acquisition of CareMore Health Group and 1800 Contacts, Inc. and the proposed acquisition of Amerigroup, Inc.; increased transparency through the Anthem Care Comparison tool to provide medical cost information to customers; and the launch of the partnership with IBM for the use of the Watson technology to provide innovative solutions in health care.
Prior to becoming CEO, she served as executive vice president, general counsel and chief public affairs officer for WellPoint. In this role, she was responsible for public policy development, government relations, legal affairs, corporate communications, marketing and social responsibility initiatives. She also managed WellPoint’s National Government Services subsidiary and previously served as president and CEO of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Missouri, managing the business and setting strategies to exceed customer needs. She joined Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, as general counsel, overseeing the company’s legal affairs and government relations, after serving for several years as a lawyer in private practice.
Under Angela’s leadership, WellPoint strengthened its commitment to its mission – to improve the lives of the people it serves and the health of its communities – in part through the WellPoint Foundation which has awarded more than $135 million in grants to organizations that promote healthy living. Through “The Angela and Doug Braly Philanthropic Empowerment Match” program, the Braly’s created a program for the United Way chapters of Central Indiana and Greater St. Louis, to inspire young women and new community and business leaders to get involved in the United Way. As part of the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl, she served as Honorary Chair for “Indy’s Super Cure,” a campaign that raised $1.85 million and collected more than 700 healthy breast tissue donations to support research at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center.
Angela also serves on the board of directors of The, Proctor & Gamble Company, Lowe’s Companies, Inc. and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. She formerly served on the board of directors of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and was a member of The Business Roundtable, The Business Council, and the Harvard Health Care Policy Advisory Council. Angela received her juris doctor from Southern Methodist University School of Law and her under-graduate degree from Texas Tech University.
